Introduction: Fault Lines in a Storied Paradigm
Noam Chomsky revolutionized modern linguistics by proposing that human language is rooted in a biologically endowed faculty of mind. In his view, language is primarily an internal system for organizing thought, not a tool for communication. The hypothesis of a Language Acquisition Device (LAD), governed by an innate Universal Grammar (UG), positioned human cognition at the center of linguistic creativity and syntactic complexity. Language, Chomsky famously argued, is “a mirror of mind” (Chomsky, 2000, p. 4).
Today, however, Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini challenge this vision. These systems, devoid of any biological substrate or mental architecture, generate coherent and seemingly intelligent discourse through purely statistical operations. Their success forces us to reassess the foundations of linguistic theory. More provocatively, Chomsky himself has reacted with unusual rhetorical sharpness, calling LLMs “high-tech plagiarism” and “a way of avoiding learning.” These remarks suggest not only theoretical tension but also a deeper cultural shift: one in which traditional expertise is being disrupted by automated systems that democratize linguistic production.
Chomsky’s Linguistic Framework: Grammar as Internal Computation
Central to Chomsky's theory is the idea that human beings are born with a specialized cognitive mechanism for acquiring language. This mechanism, often referred to as the Language Acquisition Device (LAD), enables children to infer the rules of their native language from limited and imperfect input. Once acquired, the internal grammar—what Chomsky calls I-language—allows for the generation of an infinite number of grammatical sentences from a finite set of rules and lexical items. Chomsky distinguishes between I-language (the internal, mental grammar) and E-language (the external, observable use of language), arguing that linguistic theory should focus on the former.
Even so, language acquisition cannot be explained by environmental input alone. Chomsky’s argument from the “poverty of the stimulus” emphasizes that children acquire language rapidly and uniformly despite the fragmented and insufficient data available to them. As he writes, “It is a truism, often ignored, that language acquisition is based on the child’s linguistic experience; yet the experience is not sufficient to determine knowledge of the language” (Chomsky, 1980, p. 34). This, he argues, points to the necessity of an innate grammatical framework.
In this model, language is not merely a cultural artifact but a biologically grounded capacity—what Chomsky often describes as a “mental organ” of the mind. Its primary function, he maintains, is not communication, but the facilitation of abstract thought.
LLMs and the Challenge to Innateness
Large Language Models challenge nearly every aspect of this framework. Trained on massive corpora of human-generated text, LLMs operate by predicting the statistical likelihood of the next token in a sequence. They possess no access to rules of Universal Grammar, no internal representation of meaning, and no understanding in any human sense of the word.
Yet, they produce impressively coherent and grammatically correct sentences. They mimic styles, generate plausible arguments, summarize texts, and answer questions across domains. In doing so, they appear to undermine the necessity of an innate grammar or cognitive organ for language production.
Chomsky’s response has been unequivocal. In a widely read New York Times op-ed co-authored with Ian Roberts and Jeffrey Watumull, he argued that models like ChatGPT are “derivative, composed of pastiches of the web,” and constitutionally incapable of explanation, truth, or understanding (Chomsky, Roberts, & Watumull, 2023). Elsewhere, he describes them as “tools for plagiarism” and symptoms of an educational system in decline. For Chomsky, the ability to predict the next word is not equivalent to thinking or understanding—a distinction he views as both epistemologically and morally fundamental.
Displacement of the Expert and the Democratization of Language
Part of the vehemence in Chomsky’s discourse can be understood as a reaction to the impact artificial intelligence has had on the symbolic order of academia. Language—long the domain of writers, thinkers, and scholars—is now accessible through interfaces that allow any user to articulate complex ideas, revise style, or translate texts with a fluency once reserved for specialists. This democratization of written language implies a redistribution of intellectual power.
At the same time, Chomsky, who has long defended free access to knowledge, now faces a paradox: a technology that facilitates such access appears, nevertheless, to undermine the very foundations of his theory of language, which is based on a universal grammar inscribed in the human mind.
His reaction, then, may be read less as an expression of resentment than as a defense of a conception of knowledge rooted in universal mental structures, deep semantic understanding, and formal rationality.
Derrida’s Differánce: Writing Without a Subject
Curiously, where Chomsky sees plagiarism, simulacrum, and threat, others—such as Jacques Derrida—might see an unexpected confirmation of their philosophical intuitions. In Of Grammatology, Derrida proposes that language is not an expression of a present interiority, but rather a network of traces, differences, and deferrals (différance). Meaning does not arise from intention, but from a relational play of signifiers that precedes the subject.

AI models, which possess neither consciousness nor intention, generate comprehensible texts from statistical differences between signs. In this sense, they operate as technical incarnations of the Derridean paradigm: writing without a subject, without origin, without transcendental foundation. Thus, while AI challenges the Chomskyan model of language as an organ of thought, it seems to confirm the poststructuralist thesis that language functions without ultimate ground.
Conclusion: Toward a Post-Biological Theory of Language?
Large Language Models compel us to revisit long-standing assumptions about the nature of language, thought, and meaning. Chomsky’s theory remains a powerful account of human cognitive architecture, but its explanatory dominance falters in the face of systems that generate plausible linguistic output without recourse to biological mechanisms. If LLMs function as simulated language-users without possessing a mind, then perhaps the relationship between language and cognition is more contingent—and more culturally constructed—than previously assumed.
This is not the death of the Language Acquisition Device, but it may mark the end of its uncontested reign. A new conversation is beginning—one that includes not only linguists and philosophers, but also engineers, ethicists, and machine interlocutors themselves.
