Areopagitica 2.0: John Milton and Censorship in the Digital Era

John Milton (Modern Version) Introduction John Milton’s Areopagitica (1644) stands as one of the most compelling defenses of free expression in history. Written in response to the Licensing Order of 1643, which required government approval before publication, the work passionately argues against censorship and in favor of an open marketplace of ideas. Although Milton is best known for Paradise Lost , where he explores free will, Areopagitica examines a different but equally vital aspect of liberty: free speech—the right to publish and debate freely. For him, just as individuals must navigate moral choices in a fallen world, societies must likewise allow the contest of ideas, trusting that truth will ultimately prevail.
